High-protein, low-carb keeps coming back around.
It does work — just not entirely for the reason people think.
Why the first week looks dramatic
Cutting carbohydrate empties glycogen from muscle and liver.
Every gram of glycogen holds about three grams of water, so 2–3 kg leaves with it. That is the first-week drop.
After that it is ordinary: you lose what the calorie deficit accounts for.
The real advantages
- •Protein keeps you full longer, so total intake falls on its own
- •Its thermic effect is 20–35%, the highest of any macronutrient
- •It protects muscle while you are in a deficit
- •Smaller glucose swings mean less post-meal crash and hunger
- •The rule is simple enough to follow, which matters more than it sounds
In twelve-month comparisons between diets, what predicted results was not the method but how long people stayed on it.
How far to cut
- •Moderate — 30–40% of calories. Compatible with regular training
- •Low-carb — 20–30%, the usual range for weight management
- •Ketogenic — 5–10%. Little reason to go there without a medical purpose, and it needs supervision
For protein, 1.6 g per kg is the working floor while dieting.
At 70 kg that is 112 g — roughly a palm-sized serving at each meal.
Where it actually falls apart
- •Cutting carbs to zero, losing training capacity, and quitting
- •Cutting vegetables along with the starch and ending up constipated
- •Going meat-heavy, pushing saturated fat up and blood lipids the wrong way
- •No workable plan for eating out, so every weekend undoes the week
Very low carbohydrate brings fatigue, poor concentration and constipation. Keeping at least 2–3 g per kg of body weight is the safer floor.
How to build one that lasts
- •Swap rather than remove — white rice to brown, white bread to whole wheat
- •Place carbohydrate around training, where it gets used
- •Do not cut vegetables; that fibre is what prevents constipation
- •Take fat from olive oil, nuts and oily fish rather than fatty pork
- •Run 8–12 weeks, then two to four weeks at maintenance
“A diet you cannot hold for three months is not worth comparing.”
