You can build a convenience store meal at around 500 kcal with 25 g of protein.
Fix the order you pick things up and it takes three minutes.
Grab the protein first, then fill in around it
Convenience store meals fall apart because people reach for carbohydrates first. Two rice balls come to 400 kcal and 8 g of protein.
Flip the order and the same budget builds a different meal.
| Protein source | Serving | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken breast (smoked) | 100 g | 110 kcal | 23 g |
| Boiled eggs | 2 | 140 kcal | 12 g |
| Greek yogurt | 1 cup | 100 kcal | 10 g |
| Milk | 200 ml | 130 kcal | 6 g |
| Protein drink | 1 bottle | 130 kcal | 20 g |
Three combinations cover it
- •Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, 200 ml of milk, a banana. About 370 kcal, 20 g of protein
- •Lunch: chicken breast, one rice ball, a salad. About 450 kcal, 28 g of protein
- •Late snack: Greek yogurt and cherry tomatoes. About 130 kcal, 11 g of protein
Decide what to swap, not what to avoid
| What you usually grab | Swap for | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Cup noodles | Cup rice and an egg | −150 kcal |
| Sandwich with mayo | Chicken breast salad | −200 kcal |
| Sports drink | Zero sports drink | −60 kcal |
| A bag of chips | A pack of nuts | −100 kcal |
Boxed meals have to print their calories on the back. One look tells you which ones clear 600 kcal and which stay under.
Salad is not always the answer
A convenience store salad is 150 kcal with only vegetables, and the dressing adds another 60 to 100 kcal. Caesar dressing goes past that.
Make a meal of a salad with no protein and you will be reaching for chips two hours later.
One minute at the counter decides the day
People spend under a minute choosing at a convenience store. A third of the day's intake gets decided in that minute.
Memorize one combination and the minute passes without a decision.
