Why photograph your food before you eat?

Losing weight starts with knowing what you actually eat. But looking up and logging the calories of every meal is a chore.

BeforeEat uses AI to read a photo of your meal and work out the calories and nutrition on its own. Three seconds before you eat is all it takes.

Eat what you enjoy — but knowing how much exercise it costs makes a healthy routine far easier to keep.

What exactly is a calorie?

A calorie (cal) is a unit of energy: the heat needed to raise 1 g of water by 1°C. The calories on food labels are really kilocalories (kcal), and 1 kcal is 1,000 cal.

Your body takes in energy from food and spends it on basal metabolism — breathing, your heartbeat — and on movement. Take in more than you spend and you gain weight; spend more than you take in and you lose it.

Worth knowing

  • • Daily guideline for adult men: about 2,500 kcal
  • • Daily guideline for adult women: about 2,000 kcal
  • • Deficit needed to lose 1 kg of body weight: about 7,700 kcal

Three principles of healthy weight loss

1. Cut calories gradually

Crash dieting is what brings the weight back. Hold a deficit of 300–500 kcal a day and you lose a healthy 0.3–0.5 kg a week.

2. Keep your nutrients balanced

You need carbohydrate, protein and fat in reasonable proportions. Protein especially preserves muscle and keeps you full, so aim for 1–1.5 g per kilogram of body weight.

3. Train consistently alongside it

Combining cardio with resistance work raises your metabolic rate, which makes the weight much easier to manage. Aim for 30 minutes or more, three to five times a week.
