How Many Zero-Sugar Sodas a Day?

The intake limit sits above nine cans. Caffeine and enamel are the real ceilings.

How Many Zero-Sugar Sodas a Day?

How many zero drinks a day is fine?
Go by the intake limit alone and an adult would have to pass nine cans. What actually causes trouble is elsewhere.

The daily limit is an amount you could take every day for life

The acceptable daily intake (ADI) is the amount considered safe every day for a lifetime. Regulators take the dose that showed no effect in animal studies and divide it by 100.
It is not a number where going over once does something to you.

SweetenerLimit (per kg body weight)At 60 kg
Aspartame40 mg2,400 mg
Sucralose15 mg900 mg
Acesulfame potassium15 mg900 mg
Saccharin5 mg300 mg
Steviol glycosides4 mg240 mg
ErythritolNot specified—

Put that in cans

For a drink with 200 to 300 mg of aspartame in a can, a 70 kg adult would have to pass 9 to 14 cans a day to go over the limit. That is the WHO's own example.
Many zero drinks sold in Korea blend sucralose and acesulfame potassium instead of aspartame, so exposure rarely piles onto one sweetener.

💡

The ingredient list runs in order of amount. A sweetener sitting near the top of that list means there is that much more of it.

Three things actually catch up with you

  • •Caffeine: 23 mg in 250 ml of cola. The adult daily ceiling is 400 mg
  • •Teeth: zero drinks are acidic too, and acid dissolves enamel. That is separate from sugar
  • •Your stomach: several products with sugar alcohols in one day and you get gas

For teeth, acidity matters more than sugar

Cola sits around pH 2.5, zero or not. Enamel starts dissolving at pH 5.5, well above that.
Drink through a straw, rinse with water afterward, and wait 30 minutes before brushing to limit the damage.

⚠️

Brushing right after you drink wears more enamel away. You are scrubbing a surface the acid just softened.

If you want one rule, make it two cans a day

That line comes from caffeine and teeth, not from the intake limit. Two cans come to 46 mg of caffeine and two acid exposures.
If those two replaced two sugary drinks, you cut 210 kcal from the day.
